Forza Horizon 2 logoForza Horizon 2 - Screenshot 10As a huge Forza Motorsport fan, I was highly skeptical when we were first introduced to the concept of its more casual-oriented cousin, Forza Horizon, back in 2012. Could a series that prided itself on realism really appeal to the lowest common denominator without losing it soul? Playground Games answered that with a resounding yes for the most part. Now they’re back again for a next-generation release, and it is here that the Horizon series really comes into full bloom.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today released Gauntlet, a fully modernized reboot of the celebrated dungeon crawler, on Steam for PC, offering full support for SteamOS and the upcoming Steam Machines shipping next year. Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, the game is available for an M.S.R.P. of $19.99.

“This new digital version of Gauntlet innovates on past titles while staying true to the brand’s legendary four-player format,” said David Haddad, Executive Vice President, Publishing Operations, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Multiplayer gameplay is at the core of Gauntlet’s appeal and now gamers have the option to play with friends and family locally and online.”

Players select from four classic fantasy-based characters: Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie, or Elf. Each character has its own distinctive play style and unique strengths and weaknesses. Upon selecting a playable character, the gameplay is set within dungeons where the object is to fight through the chambers slaying evil creatures and completing challenges. An assortment of special items can be located in each dungeon that can restore the player’s health, unlock doors, and shift the odds in the player’s favor with magical relics which can aid the player in surviving longer in the Gauntlet. The enemies are a vast assortment of fantasy-based monsters, including ghosts, grunts, demons, spiders, sorcerers and skeleton warriors.

The Last Tinker City of Colors windmill_00The Playstation 4 is a not a platform currently awash in kids friendly titles. Other than launch title Knack (which is actually quite difficult), it’s hard to point to a game that appeals to the youngsters both on visual terms and in storytelling. The Last Tinker: City of Colors, appears aimed to fill that niche, coming off its relative success on PC, which you can read about in our earlier review.

While I try to avoid categorizing games as only for certain audiences, it’s clear from the plot that there pretty simple moral to the story being imparted here. It revolves around a character named Koru who lives on the outskirts of Colortown. As the name implies, everything and everyone in Colortown has their own bright, primary colors to it. We learn that these colors used to mix and get along in the past, but now they’re segregated into their own districts of the town as discrimination between the reds, blues, and greens breaks out. In comes a new threat, the Bleakness, which threatens to wipe out all the color in town and begin anew. Your job as the diversely colored Koru is to rescue everyone and get them working together again. Surely this isn’t an allegory for the problems we face in the real world or anything like that. Naaaah.
